CHAPTER 15

DANIEL HAD NEVER FELT like a bigger prat in his entire life, but it was worth it to see the smile on Paige and Meg’s faces. He had endured eating tiny sandwiches and drinking orange squash while dressed like a fucking ponce, covered in glitter. But he hadn’t done it alone, his best friend, or the man he hoped was still his best friend, was sitting opposite him looking almost as bad.

“So, you and Meg are really doing this?” Dane said breaking into his thoughts and making his spine go ramrod straight.

“Yeah, we really are.” Daniel knew he would never be able to pull the wool over Dane’s eyes, the man knew him better than anyone and he deserved his total honesty, even if he had only realised himself in the last few hours. “I love her,” he said taking the biggest leap of faith he had ever taken.

He saw Dane suck in a breath. It was a big shock for him too. He hadn’t seen it coming, he had been adamant that he would not fall in love again after Claire, but he had been unable to stop himself with Meg.

“Wow, that is big. I thought you were still in love with Claire?”

“Can we get a drink later? I have a lot I need to tell you. Stuff I should have shared sooner but couldn’t.”

Dane nodded. “Sure, but can we please get out of this get-up first?”

He laughed, and Daniel knew it was going to be okay. A sense of relief hit him, like a sledgehammer. He hadn’t realised how much he missed Dane’s friendship until then.

“Yeah, I think we should definitely do that. How about we go for a drink and few games of pool at Richie’s?”

“Sounds good to me, although I might still be scrubbing glitter off until midnight.”

“Shit it suits you.” Daniel chuckled as his friend frowned.

“You realise they set us up right?”

Daniel looked at Meg and his eyes softened as she tipped back her head and laughed at something Emme, who had just arrived, grinned, and said, “Yeah.”

“Oh God, you got it bad.” Dane rolled his eyes.

“Says you, who practically follows Lauren around like a puppy.”

“Yeah well, I don’t care. I’m pussy whipped and proud.” He turned to Daniel then. “I knew when I saw you earlier. I knew you loved her. You looked at her like I look at Lauren and Zin looks at Celeste. I never saw you look at Claire like that. Like she was your whole world.” Dane turned back to watch Lauren as she cradled Aaron in her arms.

“No, I didn’t, because she wasn’t that to me,” Daniel said simply.

“Have you told her?” Dane asked after a minute or two.

“Not yet, I want to wait for the perfect moment. I need to tell her everything. But first I need to make things right with us.”

Dane turned to him then and looked him dead in the eyes, his gaze unflinching. “We’re good unless you hurt her, then I will rip your heart out and feed it to Samson.
